How We Work
Our first aim is to understand the issues you face. Then, in collaboration with you, we tailor our approach to help you tackle those issues in a satisfactory way. Throughout the work we like to obtain your feedback on what works best for you and change what doesn't. Our overall aim, is to strengthen your own ability to identify and implement solutions, so that you no longer need us and feel empowered to get more of what you really want from life. To provide you with the most effective help, we use what we believe are the best aspects from a range of coaching, counselling and psychotherapy theories.
Our Life Coaching
Our coaching is present and future focused. We use it to help you clarify your goal(s), to outline strategies for achieving them and to address preventative blocks along the way. We adopt a number of coaching, action oriented exercises to help you focus your goals and practice new ways of approaching situations.
Our Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychotherapy
Our therapy approach is present and future focused to complement our coaching style. We only explore past experience with you when it can provide useful information for removing blocks from achieving what you want in the present. Our psychotherapy training means we can help you understand and tackle problem areas or habits in a more thorough and lasting manner than possible through coaching alone. This is because we have undertaken longer, more psychologically indepth training (4-8 years versus 6 months to qualify as a coach). Additionally, as psychotherapists we are trained to work with the underlying complex issues that can block personal progress such as self-esteem, depression, anxiety, trauma etc.

How are sessions organised?
Each session lasts 50 minutes. Normally meetings are organised weekly, at the same time, on the same day - because this format is proven effective. We also work also work flexibly with appointments and some people use a fortnightly or other type of schedule. The number of sessions will vary depending on your needs. You can discuss these aspects of the service with your therapist who will be pleased to help you choose which format will work best for you. What happens at my First Appointment?
We view the first meeting, as an opportunity for you to explore whether working with us will help you find solutions to tackle the challenge(s) you are facing and achieve what you want. During this meeting we like to obtain a basic outline of the issue(s) which made you seek our service and identify what a good therapy outcome would look like for you. This meeting is also an opportunity for you to check out our style of working. We like to answer any questions you have about the way we work. We will let you know if we think the skills we have will make us effective in supporting you to find a solution for your problem. If we do not think we can be of help, we will make recommendations for alternatives that may be more helpful to you.
If we believe we can help you, we are aware that you might like to go away and think for a while before making a decision to work with us or not. Alternatively, you may like to organise a further meeting or more at the end of the session.
How Many Sessions Will I need? If you want to set a finite number of sessions but are not sure how many to choose, your therapist can make recommendations for you. Sometimes it is not possible in the first session to identify when, exactly, you will be able to make the changes you want. In such instances you can review the work regularly with your therapist. This allows you time to test the effectiveness of our approach and for you and your therapist to obtain a better idea of how long you might need to implement the changes you want.
